Reading and Phonics

Phonics is taught systematically in EYFS and key stage 1 classes. We follow the Letters and Sounds approach as outlined in ´Letters and Sounds´: Principles and Practice of High Quality Phonics, found in the Primary National Strategy 2007. We introduce each letter and sound daily using Jolly Phonics. Jolly Phonics is a systematic synthetic phonics programme designed to teach children to read and write. Children learn the 42 letter sounds of the English language through a multi-sensory approach. They are then taken through the stages of blending and segmenting words to develop reading and writing skills. At Askwith Primary school, we use the Oxford Reading Tree as our main reading scheme from Class 1 onwards. Oxford Reading Tree is one of the UK’s top reading schemes and it links very closely with systematic synthetic phonics. All of our reading books are based on Book Bands throughout EYFS and key stage 1. Throughout key stage 2, books are organised into year groups with an appropriate range of challenge and content. All children are encouraged to read a wide range of books and texts from our infant and junior library.
